All subscription refunds are handled directly in Shopify using its native refund tools—no setup required in Recurly Commerce.

You must have Shopify admin access with refund permissions

Refunds cannot be issued in Recurly Commerce
What does it mean to refund a subscription?
Refunding a subscription means returning payment for a renewal order processed through Recurly Commerce, using Shopify’s built-in order management system.

Refund method #1 (Shopify Orders tab)

Go to the Orders tab in your Shopify admin

Locate the order or search by customer name

Click Refund in the top right corner
Refund method #2 (Recurly Commerce + Shopify)

Go to the Customers tab in the Recurly Commerce app

Search for the subscriber by name or email

Scroll to the Order history section of their contract

Click the purple order link to open the Shopify order

In the Shopify order page, click Refund in the top right
Once the refund is processed in Shopify, the transaction is updated in both Shopify and Recurly Commerce systems.
