A Subscription Term acts like a contract, locking in a subscription's details (price, quantity, add-ons, etc.) for a set number of billing periods. Any changes set to occur "At Renewal" will typically only apply after the entire term has been fulfilled.
If you need to make a change at the end of the current billing period instead of the end of the full term, you can use this two-step workaround:
Step 1: Shorten the Remaining Term to Trigger the Change
-
In the Recurly Admin Console, go to the subscription and select Options > Edit Subscription.
-
Scroll to the "Remaining Subscription Term" field.
-
Make note of the current number of remaining billing periods (you will need it later).
-
Change the value to "0".
-
Leave "Apply Changes Immediately" selected.
-
Click Save Changes.
Note: This action will not create a new invoice as long as no other subscription details are changed.
Step 2: Set the New Subscription Changes to Apply at Renewal
-
Go back to Options > Edit Subscription.
-
Make the changes you need (plan, price, quantity, add-ons).
-
Select "Apply Change At Renewal".
-
In the "Renewal Subscription Term" field, enter the original value you noted earlier.
-
Click Save Changes.
Now the subscription will update at the end of the current billing cycle, and the new configuration will continue for the specified number of billing periods.
Additional Notes:
-
The "Subscription Change" email notification will be triggered twice: once for the immediate edit, and again when the renewal change takes effect.
-
If you prefer not to send the immediate change email, you can temporarily disable this notification at the plan level. Once the changes are made, you can re-enable the notification.
