Coupons and credits are applied to your invoices in a specific order and manner, influencing how discounts are calculated and when they take effect.
Percentage or Fixed Amount Coupons
These types of coupons are applied to the charge line items before tax is calculated. They always apply to the next invoice generated after the coupon is redeemed. A coupon cannot retroactively discount an invoice that has already been generated or closed.
If you need to adjust an existing invoice to reflect a discount, you have two options:
-
Issue a partial refund on the invoice equivalent to the discount amount.
-
Perform a full refund of the original invoice, then redeem the coupon, and finally, re-issue the invoice with the correct discount applied.
Credits
Credits function as their own distinct line items on an invoice. They are applied after any coupons have discounted the primary charge line items.
Free Trial Coupons
When a free trial coupon is redeemed, it creates a custom trial period at the moment the subscription is established. This means free trial coupons effectively "expire" as soon as the subscription is created. Since they don't provide a monetary discount, they are excluded from the first invoice and any subsequent invoices.
