How to Handle a VIES VAT Validation Error

The VIES validation service is a government-maintained system that we rely on to validate VAT numbers entered into Recurly. As with any web service, it can experience both scheduled and unscheduled outages.

If you see the error message: "VIES VAT number validation service unavailable, please try again later," it indicates that our system received no response from the VIES service.

• Due to the requirement to validate VAT numbers during signup, there is no way to bypass this validation system. We recommend trying again after the VIES service is back online.

• If you receive this error when trying to update existing billing information, we recommend trying again after 24 hours. If the issue persists, please contact our support team for further troubleshooting assistance.
