If you are trying to add a VAT number to the customer's Account Information and getting an "invalid number" error, you can:
1) Double check that the VAT number is valid by going here: https://ec.europa.eu/taxation_customs/vies/
2) Make sure that the Country you have saved for the account matches the "Member State" (country) registered for the VAT #. If the countries do not match, you will get an error.
